Lake Victoria South Water Services Board
Lake Victoria South Water Services Board (LVSWSB) is a State Corporation responsible for the efficient and economic provision of water and sanitation services. To achieve this mandate, the Board develops water and sanitation infrastructure in Bomet, Homa Bay, Kericho, Kisumu, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Siaya, and parts of Nandi and Narok Counties.
LVSWSB recognizes that water is a human right provided in the Constitution of Kenya, which requires that every individual, has a right to clean and adequate water and sanitation services.
Our vision which is “sustainable water and sanitation infrastructure for all” assures Kenyans and the people we serve that we are leaving no one behind in our plans to provide water and sanitation services in our area of jurisdiction. In line with this, we have in our Strategic Plan 2018 - 2022 set plans for implementation of water and sanitation projects in all Counties targeting the un- served within our area of coverage.
To realize this vision, we have made significant contribution in development of water and sanitation projects which has benefited a total 2,200,000 people in our area of jurisdiction. The Board has increased water coverage from 36% in 2007 to 63% in 2019. It has equally increased sanitation provision from25% in 2007 to 43% in2019. The number of people reached with dignified sanitation services is 500, 000.
Some of the key milestones in the development of water and sanitation infrastructure include; Kisumu Water Supply and Sanitation Project, rehabilitation of Kisii Water Supply and Sanitation Project, Keroka Water Supply and Sanitation Project, Siaya-Bondo Water Supply and Sanitation Project and a significant number of water supplies, dams, water pans and boreholes.
These achievements have elevated the social economic standards of the people in the region and further improved the overall health standards of the communities.
We have further laid strategies in to meet the Sustainable Development Goal 6 which commits to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.
In the next five years the Board plans to increase water coverage from 60% to 80% and sanitation coverage from 43% to 50%.
In line with this year’s theme, ‘Leaving no one behind’ we are implementing various Government funded projects that will serve schools, markets, health centers and industries which are currently not served by our major projects.
As a contribution towards achievement of the National water and sanitation target of increasing coverage to 80% for water and 50% for sanitation, the Board is in the process of implementing the following additional projects; LVWATSAN Kisumu Kericho-Water supply expansion works, Oyugis-Kendu Bay Water Supply Project, Nandi Hills Water Supply Project, Bomet-Mulot Water Supply Project, Kilgoris- Lolgorian Water Supply Project, Sega-Ugunja-Ukwala Water Supply Project, Trilateral Programme ( sanitation/sewerage) in Kericho, Kisii and Homa Bay among others.
The Board takes cognizance of the role good governance plays in water and sanitation infrastructure development thus, it has continued to undertake capacity building of Water Service Providers who are the utilities for the infrustructure.to enhance their governance in service provision. The Board as part of its governance involves stakeholders at all stages in the development of water and sanitation projects.
The above milestones could not have been achieved without support from the Government of Kenya, and our Development Partners who have enabled us to realize remarkable infrastructure development. We are particularly grateful to AFD, Africa Development Bank (AfDB), KfW, European Union (EU), EIB, World Bank ,UNICEF, UN-HABITAT, JICA, GIZ, the French Government, the Governments of Italy and Korea, the Government of Netherlands (ORIO) for their financial and technical support.
As we celebrate this year’s World Water Day, let us not forget the devastating effects of climate change, and join hands in developing long term solutions to tackle this threat to our existence.
